NFPA 4 Technical Committee in Action

The Technical Committee on Commissioning and Integrated Testing (TC) is meeting in San Diego this week and is knee deep in NFPAs new code development process. The TC is in the middle of their "first draft" meeting as they work towards developing the 2015 editions of NFPA 3 Recommended Practice on Commissioning of Fire Protection Systems and NFPA 4 Standard for Integrated Fire Protection and Life Safety System Testing.

The new software that is used to execute the new process allows the technical committee to resolve multiple public inputs with a single committee action, all while providing the TC with the ability to see the changes to the document as they are made. This is a new feature that will enhance the standards development process and make it easier for the TC members to see exactly how they are changes the documents.

The new terminology and methods for making motions in the meeting were expected to create a learning curve for the TC members, however after the first handful of revisions, they were off and running.

The technical committee members are taking time out of their evenings (see completely un-staged photos!!!) to refine some of the text in NFPA 4 that addresses topics like periodic integrated system testing and test methods. This task group work is commonly done off-hours and is the lifeblood of many NFPA documents. This extra effort is exemplary of the professionalism and dedication of the committee members who volunteer their time to generate first rate codes and standards....and recommended practices. Thanks to all of the volunteers who help keep the NFPA technical committees running.
