NFPA mourns the loss of a fire protection pioneer

Harry Shaw, a pillar of the fire protection community and NFPA advocate, died on March 2 at the age of 91. He served as a member of NFPA's Technical Committee on Automatic Sprinkler Systems since 1987 and was the driving force behind further refinements to NFPA 13D, Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes.

Christian Dubay, NFPA's vice president of Codes and Standards and chief engineer, praised Shaw's contributions to fire safety in the latest edition of NFPA Journal: "With Harry’s passing, we’ve lost a man who, through his many years of service and advocacy, left a legacy of commitment to that mission."

Bioflamex Corp. says it was a "natural step" to join NFPA

Bioflamex Corp, a U.S.-based international fire services company which offers “clean tech” fire prevention and fire fighting products, announced today that it has become an NFPA member.

The statement said that insights from a NFPA report on home structure fires inspired the development of the company's new aerosol extinguisher designed to aid first response against fires in kitchens, typically in conjunction with frying oil or fats self-igniting. According to NFPA's 2011 report on home structure fires, by Marty Aherns, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, while smoking materials remain the leading causes of home fire deaths.
